Biography

A native of Beijing, where she graduated from the Institute of Graphic Communications, Xiaowei Chen is now based in Boston.

Chen’s diverse body of work includes paintings, video art, and ink drawings on paper and fabric. She is a participant of many exhibitions in galleries and museums in the United States and in China, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY.  Xiaowei Chen is a recipient of several prestigious awards and distinctions, including the French Mobius International Interactive Multimedia Design Award and the Artadia New York Artist Residency.

Chen’s multi-panel large scale work “The Witness” was included in the Wheaton Biennial inaugural exhibition in 2013.

Chen’s works on paper are painstakingly drawn in the finest tradition of classical draftsmanship taken in strange new directions.  Her complex drawings are filled with a myriad of fine details, and are so dense that one can find something interesting and startling in almost every square inch of the surface.  Each work is a complex collage, as it is composed of tiny pieces of paper, painstakingly and seamlessly glued together.
